me:  i doubt that
surgeon:  can you cut between lines?
me:  yeah...
surgeon: then you can do it

      ( 4:21 PM ) shut up christine
today i scrubbed in on a brain surgery
for the first few hours i stood between the two surgeons at the head of the bed, literally 12 inches away from a person's open, pulsing brain

i'm glad i had a face mask on so no one could see that my jaw kept dropping
partly from shock but mostly in awe
it's beautiful
beautiful doesn't seem like the right word, at first
i've seen lots of beautiful things, but this was beautiful in a way i've never experienced until today

they say most students faint not from what they see, its the smells that get you-- the smell of bones being sawed or tissue getting cauterized
(i didn't faint don't worry)

i totally lucked out because the surg tech went to mount st mary's (fist pump)
so she pulled me up to the instrument table and i got to pass scissors and syringes
and drop pieces of dura into a bucket

i feel really fortunate
i know nursing students at most other schools aren't even afforded the opportunity to be in the OR
if i don't become an OR nurse, this will likely be the only time in my life that i get to experience this
i am eternally grateful
and i'll never forget it

      ( 5:39 PM ) shut up christine
if you can, please say a prayer or sit a few minutes in silence for us
i'm scrubbing in tomorrow and thursday
i don't know who you are yet
you won't see me, and i won't get to talk to you, at least not when you're conscious
but i'm wishing you the best on your surgery
thank you for letting me be here.
i really hope you get better

We are friends; we must assist each other to bear our burdens.
- Osage tribe

in a nutshell
  • first seven weeks of school down
  • nine months left (eek)
  • got an A- and a B+, and i'll take em! no complaints here
  • yeah my neighborhood is shady mcshadesters but i love living in los angeles!
i love how k town, downtown, olvera st - are a hop from where i live.  i love studying in central library, i love biking to the rose garden at exposition park to picnic
  • i'm splitting my clinical rotations between the VA (veterans hospital) and ucla.  they are wayyy different. the VA is more rugged, but i feel blessed to experience both ends of the spectrum.  again,  i have an amazing clinical instructor/mentor.  slowly creating my own practice and developing into the kind of nurse i want to be (an amazing one, but of course!)
  • and i'm gonna be in the operating room next week!  how cool is that

      ( 11:49 PM ) shut up christine
you are a strange, strange boy

i'm taking a shower (i have a claw-footed bathtub) and i drop my bar of soap
i'm all shampooed up so it takes me a minute to open my eyes
when i look down, a hand is peeking from underneath the shower curtain holding up the soap.
scares the crap out of me!
gah

weirdo

it's finals week.  big test tomorrow
and what am i doing?
stacking rocks of course! my new favorite hobby!
no, i don't have a tv, thanks for asking!
i spent the last hour carefully balancing a pointy stone on its tip
and i did it!!
it was glorious, obviously!
the thrill of atoms aligning perfectly so as to support the weight of the universe on a tiny fulcrum!
the experience is quite magical!
alas, it toppled as i was getting my camera

look at these! just look at them

      ( 5:00 PM ) shut up christine
last night m came over and i was so tired that i knocked out on my bed, didn't say goodnight or goodbye to him, don't even remember him leaving.

crap! i wake up at 5am
rush to shower & get ready for clinicals
just before i bounce i run to the kitchen to grab the bagels that he! bought for my unit
open the fridge, ahh where's the cream cheese?

and then i see... a lunchbox
where m has packed breakfast, lunch, a snack, a snack for my teacher (she loves our tuno [vegan tuna] & we made some yesterday)
and, of course, the cream cheese.

*

you know how you ask, "how do you know?"
and they say "you just know."
oh shit, now i know
you know what i mean?
i'm done looking i've found him
