healthcare PSA: medication costs

consumer reports issued an analysis comparing out-of-pocket costs for various medications at popular pharmacies

Looking at medications that treated diabetes, depression, high cholesterol, blood clots and asthma, analysts totaled how much a month's supply of each of those five drugs would cost at one pharmacy and then used that as an indicator of how expensive that pharmacy was.
source

most expensive - CVS  $916
least expensive - Costco  $167

holy moly that's a difference of $749 for the exact. same. medications!

takeaways:
- cut costs by buying the generic version, not the brand name drug
- costco for the win! you can purchase medications from a costco pharmacy even if you don't have a costco membership
but pass on the chicken bake and churros girlfriend - that's how you got high cholesterol in the first place!

red and pink

i proudly support marriage equality

i believe all Americans deserve to be treated fairly and equally under the law - no matter who they love

it is very possible that my gay cousin was the victim of a violent hate crime (trial pending)
i stand up for marriage equality and LGBT rights, in his honor and memory

truth

i get kind of annoyed when our mutual friends/acquaintances ask me about him now, as if i know.
how's __?
innocuous question that people once regularly asked me, and i used to be able to answer

it's not their fault

oh i haven't talked to him in a long time (i don't mention it's been 4 years since i last sat down with him)

why am i annoyed?
the truth is, i'm reminded that there was a time when i cared deeply for him, and he did the same.

this is not the case anymore, but it's okay.
i don't want it to go back to how it was, beacause it won't.
truthfully, i wouldn't be upset if i never saw his face again

this is not a bad thing, just the truth

about 6 months ago i got a new pair of eyeglasses, basically for free

i just thought i would let you know in case you need glasses but don't have insurance
even with insurance i've paid over $150 for glasses --frames, lenses, lens coatings-- expensive!!

you'll need a prescription (you can get an eye exam at costco or target for relatively cheap)
then go to coastal.com
new customers get their first pair of glasses for free (select styles), prescription lenses included.  in the end i paid $15 for shipping and handling. heck yeah!

if you don't like them you can easily send them back, return shipping is free

here's to better vision!

not really sure how to feel about it...

rihanna - stay

i ate a piece of salmon sashimi today
a thin slice, approx 2.5 x 1.5 inches
i gulped it down like it was no biggie

i've spent the last five years not eating meat
there were thousands of times when i wanted to eat meat, but i succeeded (in not eating meat) thousands of times

just not today.

not sure how to feel about it
neither good nor bad

this rihanna song is about food, right? :P

benefits of asparagus:  delicious and healthy
asparagus pee smell:  mega unsexy

current obsession: asparagus panini with goat cheese
  1. Asparagus is a good source of fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E and K, as well as chromium, a trace mineral that enhances the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells.
  2. It's a particularly rich source of glutathione, a detoxifying compound that helps break down carcinogens and other harmful compounds.
  3. Asparagus is packed with antioxidants, ranking among the top fruits and vegetables for its ability to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals.
  4. Another anti-aging property of this delicious spring veggie is that it may help our brains fight cognitive decline. Like leafy greens, asparagus delivers folate, which works with vitamin B12—found in fish, poultry, meat and dairy—to help prevent cognitive impairment.
  5. It contains high levels of the amino acid asparagine, which serves as a natural diuretic, and increased urination not only releases fluid but helps rid the body of excess salts.    (via)

growth of the body, mind, and soul

our go-to juice recipe as of late is 6-10 bunches of greens (usually kale), 2 bags of carrots, and apples.

i've been taking a ball of leftover veggie pulp, mixing it with tap water, and watering my plants with it

holy cow magic juice!
i poured a bit on a brown dying houseplant and the next day the innermost leaves of my plant turned green!
i put some on the grass outside and hundreds of tiny yellow flowers popped up (probably weeds, but still)
i see the effects on my grass and i can only imagine the benefits to my body

also, i haven't talked about this at all on this blog.  i still don't have a job.  i didn't start actively looking for an RN job until january of this year (that's another story) but to make a long story even longer, i've applied to many hospitals in the last couple months.  still waiting, wish me luck.  in the meantime, i've been taking classes 4-5 days a week.  dysrhythmia, 12 lead EKG, vents/trachs, sedation, rapid response, critical care, chemo, chest tubes, stroke, wound care.... i have taken or am signed up to take basically every course i can get my hands on.  it's good.  it's a lot of review, practice, developing and honing

last but not least, 3 groups of friends have invited me to join them in meditation.  in one group we meditate by ourselves and support each other via an internet forum, in another we meet up at a location and meditate in person, and in the third, we participate in a guided meditation via skype.  i'm lucky to have such a supportive community.   if you're just beginning to meditate, or if you're looking for someone to meditate with, let me know! (about meditation)
