makoto sells stuff online, so we go to thrift stores often (almost daily)
did i mention i quit my job in march?  loads of free time

i usually head straight to the book section
i try to read at least one book per week
just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society -- really liked it

currently reading State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.  good so far but i got to one kinda "scary" part and haven't been able to pick it up again...

ps i can see books, if that makes sense.  when i'm reading, i can picture everything in my mind like it's a movie.  the emotions, and the things that happen to characters -- i feel really connected to it somehow. reading is a weirdly intimate & interactive process for me

anywho
there are some books that i find all the time, in every thrift store. weird phenomenon

titles i've commonly come across on thrift store shelves:
Iacocca: An Autobiography
soooo many copies! geez
i don't really want to read this book but maybe it's a sign

any of the books from the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency series

The Best Life Diet
i've almost bought this book on 3 separate occasions (foreword by oprah! must be good!)
but have resisted thus far

The Cat Who Brought Down the House

i will continue adding to this list.

pps my favorite place to get secondhand books is at the Amvets thrift store near my apartment,
four paperbacks for a dollar.  but a lot of the books are in bins so you have to dig

i know it's april/ almost may, but here is my 2015 resolution:

i just found out that i was left handed when i was little.
i decided that i will relearn how to write with my left hand

i wrote this with my left hand on my tablet. if i keep practicing i think i'll be able to write decently by the end of the year

a couple weeks ago i spotted a vintage(?) leather coach crossbody purse for $25 at a thrift store in fountain valley

$25 is pretty steep as far as thrift stores go, but it appeared to have been used only a few times & was in great condition

inside a pocket there was a receipt for a dress from talbots dated march 24, 2000, practically fifteen years ago to the day

makoto sells our thrift store finds on ebay but i decided to keep this one

this is what's in my purse, 2015 edition:
clockwise starting top left:  coin purse, nivea a kiss of milk and honey lip balm (i keep going back to this, it's my favorite), resusable grocery bag, keys, wallet.
also my cellphone but i used it to take the picture

 grocery bag unfolded

got the coin purse in japan

on one side i keep coupons, stamp cards, and gift cards, other side is coins

i will also carry pads during lady time

i'm hella nosy and i would totally look through people's purses if they let me

we came upon gashapon/gachapon (capsule toy vending machines) on the 4th floor of the kyoto yodobashi department store

there were video games in this area as well that dispensed collector cards, i think.  kids carried binders of all the cards they had won. interestingly, a lot of the people playing these video games were older japanese businessmen

there was one game that had a particularly long line and we watched one businessman play then stand in line again....he was still playing when we checked an hour later!

anywho gashapon in japan are amazeballs. here are a few

sleepy cats

city vermin with trash

 banana birds

kittens drinking from bottles

Gudetama the lazy egg is a popular sanrio character.  "gude" describes something or someone with no energy or strength, and “tama” comes from the word tamago, meaning egg

peeing dogs
cellphone bathrobes

 sushi cats

cute bald man

 hot dog creatures

my nephew is a fan of trains, so we went with this shinkansen (bullet train) gachapon

i kept trying to get the head piece that winds up the train but i never got it! dangit we're suckers.
we stopped after spending $10
