makoto has a faint nuance to his voice, almost like an accent
(he was born & raised in the us & english is his first language)

tangent--
when we were just beginning to get to know each other, we were talking about netflix and he pronounced queue as "kwee"
as soon as he said it, at that moment i knew i wanted to be with him :)
kweeeee

anyway
i love hearing him speak in japanese to his parents
it's very soft, very respectful and polite.  sounds as if he is bowing with his words

i asked him to teach me japanese phrases

syllable by syllable he taught me these words:

"mako don arada"
beautiful! i would repeat over and over.  when i had mastered the pronunciation we moved onto the next phrase

"buru gu kin gu"
*repeat repeat repeat*

"wenaru shi ni taru"
*practice practice*

we put all the phrases together -- "mako don arada buru gu kin gu wenaru shi ni taru"

okay tell me what it means!!

mcdonalds. burger king.  wienerschnitzel.

-__-
*shakes fist at makoto*

we have another month at our place but we've started moving things out, little by little

i was cleaning out my closet and found my old shoes
makoto really wants me to keep them but i haven't worn them in forever
and also they probably still have a little pee in them

we have so much attachment to things
as if throwing away a memento somehow erases our memory

as if i need to see these shoes to remember where i've walked

when i finally understood this, letting go got a lot easier
(and i have a lot to let go!)
(also, come get free stuff at my house)

healthcare PSA:  women and stroke

earlier i did a post about recognizing the classic signs & symptoms of stroke --
facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty

but i failed to mention that women may present with different signs and symptoms altogether.
for women, the most commonly experienced symptom of stroke is altered mental status.
other key symptoms are headache and dizziness

altered mental status, headache, lightheadedness, dizziness -- that could be from anything right?
stress, not enough sleep, forgetting to eat lunch...this is why so many women fail to associate these symptoms with stroke & therefore don't seek medical attention when these symptoms appear

the important thing to take away is that the onset of stroke symptoms is sudden and you need to act fast.  call 911 immediately so they can take you to the nearest hospital that is a primary stroke center

what you can do to reduce your risk (both men and women):

* american stroke association presented evidence that drinking diet soda may increase the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, or the risk of dying of either, by 50% or more!

* sodium intake greater than 4000mg/day doubles stroke risk.  reduce sodium intake to 2300mg or less (some higher risk groups should not exceed 1500mg)  easy ways to cut sodium intake

* potassium helps maintain normal blood pressure.  those who consume more than 1.64 g of potassium in food have less hypertension & cardiovascular disease AND 21% decrease in stroke.  here's a convenient list of potassium rich foods

* smoking doubles the risk of stroke. seriously. stop smoking.  guide to quitting

*  if you have high levels of LDLs (the bad cholesterol), for each 10% reduction in LDL, stroke risk can be reduced 15-20%.  top 5 foods to lower cholesterol

today was cicLAvia!
starting in downtown LA and ending at the beach, the street was closed off to cars
thousands of people came out to walk or ride their bikes/skateboards/scooters/rollerblades.  i even saw a lady on a bike with 14 live cockatiels sitting on her shoulders (woah that's a big necklace. why is her necklace moving? omg those are birds)

luckily for us our house was along the route

Ciclovías started in Bogotá, Colombia, over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. Now they happen throughout Latin America and the United States.
we had so much fun!  i'm feeling it in my butt though, need to sit very slowly

ps happy earth day!

boo

on one side of our fence is the dae han mortuary, and toward the rear is the rosedale cemetery

there are two big trees at the dae han mortuary

makoto was chatting with one of our apartment neighbors, who has lived here for 20 years
mr. neighbor used to work late shifts and would come home at 2 or 3am

on more than one occasion, late at night he's seen a woman in a white dress standing at the base of the mortuary trees, staring with her arms crossed
other neighbors have seen her in the middle of the night as well

oh. hellz. no.

perfect timing we were already planning to move out at the end of may
we'll miss this place but it's time to peace out

 ta ta creepy tree!

healthcare psa:  organ donation
organdonor.gov

i heard this cray story the other day -- some folks think that if you're listed as an organ donor and you go to a hospital, the doctors won't help you and they will purposely let you die so that your organs can be harvested.

if this is your belief, i'm not going to shake my head and call you an ignoramus.
no judgment here.  this is why we have these PSAs, so that you can make informed decisions

what you decide to do is your business
pero when you die you won't need those body parts anymore and this one final act of love and generosity can give eight more people the gift of life.  just sayin'

FACTS:
- If you are sick or injured and admitted to a hospital, the number one priority is to save your life.

- An open casket funeral is usually possible for organ, eye, and tissue donors.  Through the entire donation process, the body is treated with care, respect, and dignity.

- There is no cost to donors or their families for organ or tissue donation.

- Federal law prohibits buying and selling organs in the US.

- People can recover from comas, but not brain death.  Coma and brain death are not the same.  Brain death is final.

if you're still having reservations or doubts about being an organ donor, i highly recommend this movie:
the power of two

healthcare PSA: stroke

stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is impaired and part of the brain dies, resulting in neurological deficits

it only takes 3-4 minutes to kill part of the brain from lack of blood flow

makoto is at high risk for having a stroke.  both his father and uncle had strokes, he has high blood pressure, eats a high sodium diet (hella sunflower seeds! grrr), history of migraines...

in all realness, he's probably going to have a stroke

unless
we do something about it now

know that 80% of all strokes are preventable

how to prevent stroke:
- manage your blood pressure yall. get it under control.  i said git it under control!!! most people don't realize how dangerous it is to have high a BP
- stop smoking (obviously!)
- exercise regularly
- manage your diabetes if you have it
- eat a low sodium diet
- drink alcohol in moderation
- know the symptoms of stroke

image via

if you suspect someone is having a stroke, call 911 immediately
one common mistake is that the people who really need ambulances aren't the ones who call for ambulances! they try to drive to the hospital themselves, and more often than not, they end up going to the wrong facility.  time lost = brain lost!  you need to go to a hospital with a primary stroke center, not all hospitals have one. the ambulance will automatically take you to the closest stroke center

when i stepped out this morning i thought someone had pelted the sidewalk in front of our house with berries of some kind

circular red stains everywhere
as i continued walking, i realized they were the bloody pawprints of a small dog

they were concentrated at the entrance gate to the mortuary, as if the animal had paced back and forth there

with that amount of blood loss, i doubt it could have survived

makoto traced the blood trail down our block but didn't find a body

i'm sorry
it must have been so scared and in so much pain
i wish we could have done something
