*Pickles runs from Makoto*

makoto:  why does Pickles hate me?
me:  because you're a bad person
makoto:  i'm a good and wonderful person

One carries a chip on one's shoulder as a form of physical challenge, inviting opponents to knock the chip off and so provoke a fight. The concept is now metaphorical, describing people who nurse a grudge or grievance that readily provokes fury or disputation. via

yesterday a gummy bear sized "chip" was removed from my right shoulder
the excision wasn't painful (anesthesia of course)
it's the healing part that hurts

this has been the case for so many situations in my life
many times, the everything-after is harder than the trauma itself

no matter how long it takes, eventually there comes a moment when it doesn't hurt anymore

so true.  haven't we all been here

The face that you saw in the door isn't looking at you anymore
The name that you call in its place isn't waiting for your embrace
The world that you love to behold cannot hold you anymore

In a matter of time, it would slip from my mind
In and out of my life, you would slip from my mind
In a matter of time

trust me

as much as you hate turning off the computer and putting on your sneakers
you always feel better after a sweaty jog

as much as you love being a loner and hermit, it's good to see people once in a while

as much as you could probably think of a hundred ways to spend your nights other than studying spanish medical vocab, at some point you will be so glad you took the time to do this

in the future you will read this and nod your head

this summer i got into the habit of drinking a glass of lemon or lime water first thing in the morning
before eating anything else

i can only speak for myself but DAYUM what a difference

this may be tmi but it really helps with the bowel movements
back in the day i used to poop once a month (for real not even joking)
anyhoo now i go everyday sometimes twice a day
that's all i have to say about that
yay

also i have struggled with acne
for many years i had cystic acne on my jaw below my earlobes
and while it hasn't been that bad for a long time
girlfriend can i just say for the last month my skin has never been better
(not flawless by any means, but it's a vast improvement from where i've been)
it even helped with the rough-red-patches-maybe-this-is-lupus-butterfly-rash on my cheeks
whatever it was, it went away

granted, i've been getting hella sleep and drinking lots of fresh green juice and water
and taking vitamins. i'm sure all of these things play a part

if you replaced your morning coffee with lemon water, maybe you would start to see and feel benefits in a couple weeks as well
every morning i squeeze 2 or 3 limes (we have a lime tree, and i use a lot because i like it strong) into a 16 oz jar of filtered water
i drink it through a straw to protect my teeth

Anything you cannot relinquish when it has outlived its usefulness possesses you.  And in this materialistic age a great many of us are possessed by our possessions.
-Mildred Lisette Norman

Pickles is an indoor only kitty
she's spent many afternoons at this spot, looking out
i used to think she was plotting her escape
but we've left the door wide open and she won't step outside
perhaps she's afraid

a couple months ago i purchased makeup from sephora
a sampler of pretty nude lipglosses

then i bought more
mascaras
eyeshadow palettes
3 different types of powder
i kept going

the odd thing is
i don't wear makeup
and when i try to, i've only bought the most neutral translucent nude shades that are practically invisible on my skin

why
my retail therapy serves no external purpose.  the makeup literally doesn't show
so why am i doing this?

from now until the end of the year at least, i pledge not to buy anything
no new material things for myself
(except food and toiletries like toothpaste, or unless i need to purchase scrubs or something for work)

when i think about it
i already have everything i need. a pair of jeans can last 3 or 4 years, maybe longer
i wouldn't need to get another pair until i'm 33

made a juice with green cactus pears, which have an aloe-like skin and a sweet seedy center.
juice was yummy but had a phlegmmy consistency

benefits of cactus pears via

- the prickly pear was shown to lower blood sugar in people having type 2 diabetes. A single dose can decrease sugar levels by 17 to 46%.
- protects the immune system and prevents oxidative stress by acting as a fighter against free radicals
- reduces post-exercise muscle soreness, speeds recovery of muscles, and reduces the chances of developing delayed onset muscle soreness
- it's been sold as a hangover preventive in Korea.  Two tablets taken before drinking helps your digestive system cope with the overload of alcohol
also we have soup weather! autumn is my favorite time of the year

pickles almost never meows.  she also has difficulty purring, probably because her face and nose are so smooshed

she says i love you by opening and closing her mouth

one of the many amazing things about the care harbor clinic last weekend was the sheer size of it.
thousands of people lined up at the LA sports arena as early as 3am to receive medical, vision, and dental care
there is such a huge need for these services
and the community responded by volunteering their time and expertise

on sunday i was with the subspecialty unit, escorting patients to chiropractors, dermatologists, cardiologists, etc
in the organized chaos of it, one woman got angry and started yelling at me
in the past, i would have taken it to heart
(i'm a cancer, i'm sensitive)
but this time the insults just rolled off

also, someone or something is watching out for me
last week my car wouldn't start
we just happened to be parked next to a hare krishna temple
and so many kind people offered to help us

last night i came home and someone, probably one of my neighbors, had put a plastic bag on my doorknob
in it was a huge stalk of brussels sprouts :)

lastly, i want to be fluent in spanish by my next birthday
which is approximately 40 weeks from now
i better jump on it
