but what does it mean???

i had a dream that an old white monk in brown robes with a deep voice took me to a cornfield and cut open my cardigan with a knife, i was naked underneath.  it wasn't sexual, it was more to teach me a lesson for something.  prior to that we were in a huge packed theater for a show/orientation for a trip abroad somewhere.  we all had our suitcases with us so i had an extra change of clothes.  pink (the singer) was in the lobby, in disguise, singing at a concession stand. no one paid any attention to her. turns out we were there for her concert.  outside the theater was a big festival. i held monk's hand as we walked through the festival to the cornfield (i am also wearing monk robes, but mine are peach). now and then he lifts me into the air. i asked him if he had enough funds to continue all his charity projects, he said he would've paid for my trip abroad if he could.
then he pulls out a knife and slashes my cardigan

that is all

the wait

i had spent many weeks researching this plant
was going to purchase one online but found a nursery 45 miles away that carried it
took home a twig with a few leaves

fast forward several weeks
out of the two buds i have, one has just opened
some of its petals have already started browning

"The flowers last at best for two days. After the first 24 hours, petals slowly fade to beige and then abruptly turn brown."

i've waited months for this moment
to enjoy the smell and beauty of a flower for a few hours

there is no thrill of instant gratification
there is no enduring reward to compensate for my patience

even though it only lasts a short time
this little wilting flower gives me so much joy

"c-booth is a state of mind"

my emergency nursing instructor is in the movie Code Black, a documentary about C-booth at LA County Hospital
you can watch an extended clip of it here, if you only have a minute i suggest you watch from 1:05 to 2:10
the full movie is playing this tuesday june 17 at the LA film festival

after one of our classes i cried for an hour during my commute home.  not sure exactly why, i need to look at that a little more closely

i've definitely gained lots of didactic knowledge but i didn't think it would require so much internal work on my part

it takes a lot of work
to learn what your triggers are
to find a place that you can go to on the inside
to detach from your prejudices and emotions

it's not something you can cram for, yanno?

healthcare PSA:  diabetic neuropathy & foot care

in nursing school i had a patient who stubbed his toe
stubbing your toe usually isn't all that serious
but he was diabetic and eventually his foot had to be amputated.
i sat with his wife and held her as she cried -- she didn't understand how this could have happened. they didn't know it was that serious

another true life scenario: man wakes up from a nap and freaks out because there's blood on the bed and all over his dog.  turns out the dog had chewed off his toes and he didn't feel it

over time, high blood sugar due to diabetes can cause nerve damage so that you might not feel sensations like pain.  many organs can be affected (kidneys, heart etc) but it's especially common to have neuropathy in the feet and legs.  you might get a sore or blister on your foot, and not know it's there.  poor blood flow lends to poor healing, making the wounds prone to infection, gangrene, and necrosis

it's incredibly important to pay extra attention to the feet if you or someone you know is diabetic.
below are some good tips from the NIDDK.  their website is a great resource

What can I do to take care of my feet?

Drawing of a woman dressed in a bathrobe who is sitting in a chair and checking the bottom of her left foot.
Look at your feet every day to check for problems.
  • Wash your feet in warm water every day. Make sure the water is not too hot by testing the temperature with your elbow. Do not soak your feet. Dry your feet well, especially between your toes.
  • Look at your feet every day to check for cuts, sores, blisters, redness, calluses, or other problems. Checking every day is even more important if you have nerve damage or poor blood flow. If you cannot bend over or pull your feet up to check them, use a mirror. If you cannot see well, ask someone else to check your feet.
  • If your skin is dry, rub lotion on your feet after you wash and dry them. Do not put lotion between your toes.
  • File corns and calluses gently with an emery board or pumice stone. Do this after your bath or shower.
Drawing of a nail clipper and an emery board.
  • Cut your toenails once a week or when needed. Cut toenails when they are soft from washing. Cut them to the shape of the toe and not too short. File the edges with an emery board.
  • Always wear slippers or shoes to protect your feet from injuries.
Drawing showing two feet clad in slippers
Always wear slippers or shoes to protect your feet.
  • Always wear socks or stockings to avoid blisters. Do not wear socks or knee-high stockings that are too tight below your knee.
  • Wear shoes that fit well. Shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are bigger. Break in shoes slowly. Wear them 1 to 2 hours each day for the first few weeks.
  • Before putting your shoes on, feel the insides to make sure they have no sharp edges or objects that might injure your feet.

    be healthy and well!

i didn't think we owned that much stuff
but after carrying the weight of all our crap in my arms up the stairs,
yup we have too much

too much, like mariah in this music video
mariah, girlfriend. too much.  i really like this song but i find this video to be bizarre!

mariah carey ft. miguel - beautiful

the pain in my arms and calves has motivated me to downsize our pile of belongings.
i have hundreds of pounds of books that i never want to carry up stairs ever again
have you seen these little free libraries popping up in your neighborhood? what a sweet idea.  i would love to do something like this, even if it's just a shelf in our house
