the wait
i had spent many weeks researching this plant
was going to purchase one online but found a nursery 45 miles away that carried it
took home a twig with a few leaves
fast forward several weeks
out of the two buds i have, one has just opened
some of its petals have already started browning
"The flowers last at best for two days. After the first 24 hours, petals slowly fade to beige and then abruptly turn brown."
i've waited months for this moment
to enjoy the smell and beauty of a flower for a few hours
there is no thrill of instant gratification
there is no enduring reward to compensate for my patience
even though it only lasts a short time
this little wilting flower gives me so much joy
