this is a very superficial example:
when i was in india i bought a beautiful brown and blue shawl with a paisley pattern embroidered with delicate gold threads.  my favorite.
one day a friend saw it and said she loved it
so i took it off my neck, hugged it (yes, i hugged it.  silently said goodbye to it too) and gave it to her.  
an exercise in nonattachment -- or so i thought
that was maybe 3 or 4 years ago

but every time i pass a shop or department store with scarves, i look for it

how many times have i "given" something away
only to hold on to it in my mind
